| WHEREAS, The Muslim American residents of Texas have | ||
| benefited our state in countless ways over the course of many | ||
| decades, and their achievements are indeed deserving of | ||
| recognition; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The state with the fifth largest Muslim population | ||
| in the nation, Texas is home to an estimated 500,000 people who | ||
| practice Islam, with the majority of those residents living in the | ||
| cities of Houston and Dallas; moreover, Texas has the largest | ||
| Muslim population in the southern U.S., and more than 330 mosques | ||
| and Islamic centers are located in the state; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Countless members of Texas' Muslim American | ||
| community have devoted their lives to service, extending support | ||
| and assistance to individuals across the state through charitable | ||
| donations and civic organizations; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Muslim community fosters compassion and peace | ||
| through the tenets of Islam, which include zakat (giving) as an | ||
| obligatory religious practice; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in Texas have distinguished | ||
| themselves in a broad range of endeavors, including as medical | ||
| professionals, first responders, and teachers who have | ||
| demonstrated an exceptional commitment to serving their fellow | ||
| residents; in addition, Muslims have had an important influence in | ||
| business, politics, technology, the arts, and numerous other | ||
| fields; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Muslim American community is an integral part of | ||
| the Lone Star State's vibrant and diverse mix of cultures, and the | ||
| observance of Muslim Heritage Month offers a welcome opportunity to | ||
| celebrate the meaningful contributions of its members; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
| hereby designate May as Muslim Heritage Month; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section | ||
| 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect | ||
| until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally | ||
| passed by the legislature. | ||
