HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 
         WHEREAS, The Space Center Intermediate Band in Houston is one
  of only three ensembles in the nation to earn the 2010 Sudler Cup
  from the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and
         WHEREAS, This prestigious annual award is presented to junior
  high and middle school concert band programs that have demonstrated
  a consistent commitment to excellence over a period of several
  years, and Space Center Intermediate is the only school to ever win
  the cup twice; its first cup in 1999 recognized the excellence of
  the band program under its founding director, Gregory Dick, while
  its most recent achievement is a testament to the band's continuing
  excellence under Donald McCandless, director since 2000; and
         WHEREAS, Since Space Center Intermediate School opened in
  1992, the band has won numerous prizes and medals, including a total
  of 40 Sweepstakes Awards at University Interscholastic League
  competitions, and it was named a 2008 national winner in the Mark of
  Excellence/National Wind Band Honors Project; in addition, Space
  Center students have won more than 5,000 medals for solo and
  ensemble performances; and
         WHEREAS, Building on a long-standing tradition of
  achievement, the talented student musicians of the Space Center
  Intermediate Band have earned great distinction for themselves and
  their school, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor them; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby congratulate the Space Center Intermediate Band on its
  receipt of a 2010 Sudler Cup from the John Philip Sousa Foundation
  and extend to the band's directors and musicians sincere best
  wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the band as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives and Senate.
