| WHEREAS, Throughout its history, from its earliest days as a | ||
| Spanish colony to the most recent events of today, Texas has | ||
| benefited enormously from the contributions of Latino residents; | ||
| and | ||
| WHEREAS, Individuals of Hispanic descent have excelled in all | ||
| sectors of our society and economy, helping to build Texas into a | ||
| productive state that is focused on the future; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Texans who trace their heritage to Mexico, Central | ||
| and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain have created a cultural | ||
| legacy that has influenced our way of life in innumerable ways and | ||
| greatly enriched the distinctive music, arts, food, and traditions | ||
| that are associated with the Lone Star State; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Adherence to the time-honored values of hard work | ||
| and sacrifice and belief in the importance of family and faith are | ||
| widespread among Latinos in our state and have strengthened the | ||
| unifying identity that binds all Texans; moreover, members of the | ||
| Hispanic community have distinguished themselves in a willingness | ||
| to take up arms for our nation, valiantly stepping forward time and | ||
| again through the decades; in so doing, these courageous men and | ||
| women have defended their fellow citizens and upheld the principles | ||
| of equality and liberty; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In 1968, Congress authorized the president to issue | ||
| an annual proclamation in honor of Latino citizens, and two decades | ||
| later the 100th Congress passed a law designating National Hispanic | ||
| Heritage Month, a 31-day period that begins on September 15 and ends | ||
| on October 15 each year; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is widely celebrated by | ||
| people throughout our state, and in light of the immense | ||
| contributions that individuals of Latino descent have made to | ||
| Texas, it is indeed appropriate that this observance receive formal | ||
| state recognition; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
| hereby designate September 15 to October 15 as Latino Texan Month; | ||
| and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That in accordance with the provisions of Section | ||
| 391.004(d), Government Code, the designation expires on the 10th | ||
| anniversary of the date this resolution is passed by the | ||
| legislature. | ||
