relating to a personal financial literacy component in a statistics | ||
course offered for public high school graduation. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 28.0021, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (d) to read as follows: | ||
(d) If the State Board of Education approves a statistics | ||
course as an advanced mathematics course as provided under Section | ||
28.025(b-2), as amended by Chapter 211 (H.B. 5), Acts of the 83rd | ||
Legislature, Regular Session, 2013, the course must include | ||
instruction in personal financial literacy relating to: | ||
(1) avoiding and eliminating credit card debt; | ||
(2) being a prudent investor in the stock market and | ||
using other investment options; and | ||
(3) beginning a savings program and planning for | ||
retirement. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2016-2017 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
