| relating to physical examination requirements for participation in | ||
| certain University Interscholastic League extracurricular athletic | ||
| activities. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 33, Education Code, is | ||
| amended by adding Section 33.093 to read as follows: | ||
| Sec. 33.093. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIRED FOR | ||
| PARTICIPATION IN CERTAIN EXTRACURRICULAR ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES. (a) | ||
| A student may not participate in an extracurricular athletic | ||
| activity involving physical contact among the players, including an | ||
| athletic practice, scrimmage, game, or match for such an activity, | ||
| sponsored or sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League | ||
| unless the student has submitted to the school district in which the | ||
| student attends school a completed form indicating that the student | ||
| has received a physical examination, including a cognitive | ||
| assessment. | ||
| (b) A student must submit a form under this section for each | ||
| school year in which the student participates in an extracurricular | ||
| athletic activity to which this section applies. | ||
| (c) The University Interscholastic League shall adopt rules | ||
| to administer this section, including rules specifying: | ||
| (1) the athletic activities that involve physical | ||
| contact among the players; and | ||
| (2) the type of medical personnel authorized to | ||
| perform the physical examination required by Subsection (a). | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2011-2012 | ||
| school year. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
| a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
| provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
| Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
| Act takes effect September 1, 2011. | ||
