| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Section 29.153, Education Code, is amended by | ||
| adding Subsections (g) and (h) to read as follows: | ||
| (g) The commissioner shall adopt a uniform schedule that | ||
| provides the period during which school districts may enroll | ||
| students in a prekindergarten program for the following school | ||
| year. The period for enrollment under the uniform schedule adopted | ||
| by the commissioner must be at least 10 school days. Except as | ||
| provided by Subsection (h), a school district may not enroll a | ||
| student in a prekindergarten program during any other period. | ||
| (h) A school district may adopt a policy that allows a | ||
| student to enroll after the enrollment period if the student: | ||
| (1) becomes a resident of the district after the | ||
| enrollment period; and | ||
| (2) enrolls in the district on or before the 10th day | ||
| after the date the student becomes a resident of the district. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 | ||
| school year. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
| a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
| provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
| Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
| Act takes effect September 1, 2017. | ||
