| relating to policies and procedures for the issuance of personal | ||

| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Chapter 17, Code of Criminal Procedure, is | ||
| amended by adding Article 17.034 to read as follows: | ||
| Art. 17.034. RELEASE ON PERSONAL BOND IN CERTAIN COUNTIES. | ||
| Notwithstanding any other law, the sheriff of a county with a | ||
| population of 700,000 or more but less than 780,000 may, with the | ||
| consent of the attorney representing the state in that county, | ||
| develop policies and procedures for the release of defendants on | ||
| personal bond if necessary to alleviate overcrowding in the county | ||
| jail. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. | ||
