| relating to the eligibility of certain entities for grants awarded | ||
| by the criminal justice division of the governor's office. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Section 772.006, Government Code, is amended by | ||
| adding Subsection (g) to read as follows: | ||
| (g) The criminal justice division may not award a grant to | ||
| the Department of Public Safety, the Texas Department of Criminal | ||
| Justice, a police department of a municipality with a population of | ||
| 800,000 or more, or a sheriff's department of a county with a | ||
| population of one million or more unless the department is a party | ||
| to an agreement with the United States Secretary of Homeland | ||
| Security and United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement | ||
| under Section 287(g), Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. | ||
| Section 1357). | ||
| SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | ||
| to a grant application submitted to the criminal justice division | ||
| of the governor's office on or after the effective date of this Act. | ||
| A grant application submitted before the effective date of this Act | ||
| is governed by the law in effect on the date the application was | ||
| submitted, and that law is continued in effect for that purpose. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. | ||
