A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW UPON THE PASSING OF JANNIE LOU MCCULLOUGH MITCHELL AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jannie Lou McCullough Mitchell on July 30, 2021; and

Whereas, a native of Salters, Mrs. Mitchell was born on October 3, 1943 to parents Isaiah and Elvira McCullough. She was the only daughter of five children and was educated in the Williamsburg County school system. Later in life, she earned an associate degree in Secretarial Science and a Word Processing certificate; and

Whereas, in 1964, Mrs. Mitchell moved to New York in search of a prosperous life. There she met Francis Mitchell, Jr. They discovered that they arrived on the same bus on the same day. They were joined in holy matrimony on July 5, 1964; and

Whereas, a devout Christian, Mrs. Mitchell joined Bethelite Institutional Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where she sang in the choir and worked with the youth choir. After her mother's passing, Mrs. Mitchell and her family moved back to Salters, and she recommitted to Jerusalem United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and working with the church youth; and

Whereas, in 1981, Mrs. Mitchell became the first lady of Union #2 Baptist Church and St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as Director of the Youth Department and Youth Choir for many years. She participated in the Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows Auxiliary of the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist and Educational Association; and

Whereas, a talented singer, Mrs. Mitchell was called on as a soloist for all occasions. She was asked to share her gift at weddings, galas, funerals, programs, concerts, and events throughout the State; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by a son, Howard Mitchell; and two brothers, Abraham McCullough and Emory McCullough; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mitchell leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband, Rev. Francis Mitchell, Jr.; her children, Zelda Yolanda Mitchell Douglas, Trinette Terella Mitchell McKnight (Michael, Sr.); Edwin Ellis Mitchell (Wykesia); Tiffany Lecrease Mitchell; Willona Penthea Mitchell Torres (Victor); Clarice Elvira Mitchell Pressley (Dessie, Sr.); two brothers, Clarence McCullough (Alberta) and Waitus McCullough (Charlene); twenty-three grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving family members and friends. She will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the passing of Jannie Lou McCullough Mitchell and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Jannie Lou McCullough Mitchell.
