A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOR SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS VOLLEYBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS ON AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO HONOR THEM FOR WINNING THE 2018 CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is proud to recognize the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics volleyball team for winning the 2018 Class A State Championship title in Lexington on Saturday, November 10, 2018; and

Whereas, in the state championship match, the Governor's School triumphed over lower-state champions Branchville High School. The win was a much-anticipated settling of scores for the Governor's School, as it had lost to Branchville in the 2016 championship; and

Whereas, the Governor's School won the first match 25-20, the second match 25-21, and the fourth match 25-17 after pulling away with an 8-0 streak; and

Whereas, standout players during the game included team captains Mikey Pennell and Layne Scopano, Nyla Parker, and Brynn Sion; and

Whereas, the enthusiastic Governor's School crowd cheered from the first serve to the last, and at the end of the match, more than one hundred chanting fans stormed the court. The City of Hartsville celebrated the team's arrival with a police escort and a water canon, thrilling the team, fans, and parents who were present; and

Whereas, with an exceptional season overall, the Governor's School volleyball team has put in countless grueling practices, hard work, and commitment in their pursuit of the championship; and

Whereas, as interim volleyball coach, Hugh O'Connor, who also serves as the school's athletics director, has led these young athletes to success and has taught them important lessons that will serve them well both on and off the court; and

Whereas, this win marks the third state championship in 2018 by one of the Governor's School's athletic teams. The school's students have proven to be champions not only in the classroom, but also on the field and on the court; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics volleyball team has brought to its school and community and look forward to a future filled with further accomplishments by the team and its talented athletes. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics volleyball team, coaches, and school officials on an outstanding season and honor them for winning the 2018 Class A State Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to President Hector Flores and Coach Hugh O'Connor of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.
