A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF ROBERT ADAMS, VI, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Robert Adams, VI, on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the age of fifty-five; and
Whereas, a native of Columbia, Robert Adams, VI, was born on July 3, 1963. He was an alumnus of the Hammond School and Clemson University, and he came from a long lineage of men and women who, like Robert, worked selflessly for the well-being of the local community, the State of South Carolina, and the nation; and
Whereas, as a preeminent Statehouse lobbyist, Robert worked with McGuire Woods Consulting, and as a campaign consultant, he worked on President George H.W. Bush's 1988 presidential campaign and ran campaigns for U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, Governor David Beasley, Congressman Joe Wilson, and others. He also worked for the Republican National Committee and served in the administrations of Governor Beasley and Governor Sanford; and
Whereas, a noted conservationist, Robert was instrumental in giving the Congaree Land Trust a conservation easement on Wavering Place, and he also served on the Land Trust's Board of Directors and the Kensington Plantation Foundation Board of Directors. Most notably, he led the campaign that successfully opposed the Green Diamond Development, a planned community proposed adjacent to the Congaree National Park's rare virgin bottomland forest; and
Whereas, a loyal, dependable, and loving friend to many, Robert was the keystone of many different social groups and organizations. As a civic leader, he served as President of the St. Andrews Society of Columbia; President of the Town Club; camper, camp director, and perennial reunion organizer for Camp Deerwoode; and an active member in many clubs, including the Society of the Cincinnati, the Columbia Cotillion Club, the Society of Lower Richland, the Forum Club, and the Welcome Society; and
Whereas, Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Shana Voll Adams, to whom he was devoted; his sons, PFC Joel Adams and Robert Adams, VII; his parents, Ambassador Weston Adams and Elizabeth Nicholson Nelson Adams, PhD; his brothers, Weston Adams, III (Elizabeth Boykin Adams), the Rev. Daniel Wallace Adams-Riley (Gena Adams-Riley), and Julian Calhoun Adams, II; his nieces and nephews, Isabel Hope Adams, Edward Weston Boykin Adams, Patrick Henry Nelson Adams-Riley, Fin M'Coul Adams-Riley, and Elizabeth "Libba" Wentworth Adams; his uncles, Dr. Julian Calhoun Adams and James Emerson Smith; his aunts, Martha Whaley Adams Cornwell, Nina Geddes Nelson Smith, and LeGrand Moorer Nelson; his cousins, former Rep. James Smith (Kirkland), Helen Calhoun Stanton-Adams (Danielle), Charles St. George Sinkler Adams II, William Shannon Nelson III (Lori), Francis Pickens Nelson, and Caroline LeGrand Nelson; countless other kinsmen; and the mother of his sons, Bonnie Drake Loomis, along with her husband Chris Loomis and their daughter Anna Leah Loomis. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Robert Adams, VI, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Robert Adams, VI.
