A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE GEORGE LUNN ON THE GRAND OCCASION OF HIS ONE HUNDRED AND THIRD BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HIM A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION.

Whereas, born on September 17, 1917, in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. At twenty years of age, he began a career working for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. He attempted to join the United States Army during World War II, but was refused due to the essential nature of the railroads to the nation's war effort. Thanked for his service as a railroad worker personally by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he remained a steadfast and diligent employee until a diagnosis of prostate cancer forced his retirement in 1972, after thirty-five years of dedicated service; and

Whereas, a man of great strength, Mr. Lunn has experienced and overcome many hardships. Despite being a survivor of the Spanish Flu Epidemic and the Great Depression, his greatest fight was, in fact, his battle with prostate cancer, which he committed to with great success, becoming now the oldest living survivor of prostate cancer; and

Whereas, a man of devout faith, George has been a lifelong Methodist. Throughout his years, he experienced the evolution of the Methodist Episcopal Church into the Methodist Church, and then finally into the United Methodist Church, as Wesleyan and Methodist denominations merged together. He has spent much of his life reading and studying the Bible, and continues to share his faith, despite his failing eyesight, by quoting Scripture and singing hymns committed to memory; and

Whereas, much loved throughout his life, George has been married twice. His spent thirty beautiful and steadfast years with his first wife Gladys, until her untimely death. Thereafter, he spent thirty-seven joy-filled years with his second wife Ruth, until she also passed; and

Whereas, George is known by many for his great kindness, generosity, positive attitude, encouraging spirit, and willingness to step in and help others. From his early days, working hard on the railways, to teaching Sunday School and serving as a volunteer fireman, he has given often of his time and talents for the benefit of others and serves as an example and role model to many; and

Whereas, birthdays provide a special time and opportunity to celebrate and honor those of great importance in our lives. It is a great pleasure to join with George's family and many friends on September 17, 2020, to recognize his many years and congratulate him on reaching this auspicious milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate George Lunn on the grand occasion of his one hundred and third birthday and wish him a joyous birthday celebration.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to George Lunn.
