A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF GERTRUDE N. WASHINGTON OF WINNSBORO, TO CELEBRATE HER LIFE, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the passing of Gertrude N. Washington of Winnsboro on June 9, 2022, at the venerable age of nearly ninety-two; and
Whereas, born the daughter of George and Fannie Kennedy of Winnsboro, the former Gertrude Nadine Kennedy came into this world on June 25, 1930. Educated in the public schools of Fairfield County, she graduated in 1949 from Camp Liberty High School, where she participated in both basketball and track; and
Whereas, Gertrude, who had a great love for cooking, began her culinary career in 1962 at Winnsboro High School. She later served as cafeteria manager of Kelly Miller Elementary from 1966 until her retirement in 1993. She began volunteering with the cafeteria staff for one year before she was rehired in 1995. Gertrude passionately served in that position until 2007; and
Whereas, this woman of faith was a dedicated member of New Hope AME Church and served there as president of the New Hope Missionary Society for almost three decades. She was also a Sunday School teacher and former member of the New Hope Steward Board. In addition, Gertrude was a faithful member of Progressive Chapter #253, Order of the Eastern Star, for fifty-four years and served as a Fairfield County poll worker and member of the Progressive Citizen Community Group; and
Whereas, in 2019, Kelly Miller Elementary School's cafeteria was renamed the Gertrude Washington Cafeteria in honor of her many years of service and dedication; and
Whereas, preceded in death by her husband, Loney Washington, Gertrude leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Nadine D. Washington and Jacqueline D. Washington; her son, Lionel Washington (Betty); two grandchildren, Carmen Washington (Katina) and Quinton Washington (Latrelle); one great-grandchild, Aliyah Nicole Washington; one brother, George Paul Kennedy (Alfannie); one brother-in-law, Robert Washington; and a host of other family members and friends. She will be missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Gertrude N. Washington of Winnsboro, celebrate her life, and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Nadine D. Washington for the family.
