A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND SALUTE THE SPRING VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2018 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS AAAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Spring Valley High School basketball team of Richland County took top honors at the state competition held at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia on Friday, March 2, 2018; and

Whereas, to the cheers of their exuberant fans, the Spring Valley Lady Vikings defeated the competitive Wade Hampton High School team 49-37; and

Whereas, Spring Valley finished the season with a 28-2 record and captured the team's third state title in four years, the fifth since 2009, and the sixth overall; and

Whereas, denied the title in 2017, the Lady Vikings made a slow start in the championship game against Wade Hampton, and scoring was at a minimum until junior Ashley Williamson, who has committed to Clemson, shot an open 3-pointer with thirty-five seconds remaining in the first half and followed it with a second long-range shot, sending the Lady Vikings to the lockers with a 15-8 lead; and

Whereas, junior Taylor Lewis caught her rhythm in the second half, where she scored 16 of her 18 game points, and she led Spring Valley, amassing seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals; and

Whereas, Ashley Williamson scored 10 points for the Lady Vikings, while teammate Destiny Coleman posted 8 points and Kristian Wall 7; Lauryn Taylor added 4 points and brought down ten rebounds, and Tykiera Wiley followed with 2 points; and

Whereas, Head Coach Megan Assey and her skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own experience and passion to teach these athletes life lessons that will prove invaluable both on and off the court by building strength, agility, and accuracy into their players and forging a team marked by a championship culture; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives value the repeated pride and recognition that the Spring Valley basketball players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their future success in the days to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and salute the Spring Valley High School girls varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an extraordinary season and congratulate them for winning the 2018 South Carolina Class AAAAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Jeff Temoney and Coach Megan Assey.
