A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR PAGELAND FIRE DEPARTMENT CAPTAIN STEVE LONG FOR HIS HEROIC ACTIONS, RESPONDING WITHOUT REGARD FOR HIS PERSONAL SAFETY TO SAVE THE LIFE OF A CITIZEN IN PAGELAND.

Whereas, on November 28, 2019, Pageland Fire Department Fire Captain Steve Long responded to an Automatic Aid structure fire in an occupied dwelling on South Tory Road in Pageland; and

Whereas, Captain Long arrived at the scene in his personal vehicle just minutes ahead of the Pageland Fire Department's Engine 2 crew and began assessing the dwelling fire, which was heavily charged with deadly smoke throughout with a heavy volume of fire advancing from the kitchen to the den and bedrooms areas; and

Whereas, when bystanders reported to Captain Long that a victim was in the dwelling, he crouched low and entered the front door of the dwelling to search for any trapped victims near the heavy smoke and fire conditions in the kitchen area. He located an unconscious female victim lying on the den floor near the kitchen area fire; and

Whereas, under rapidly deteriorating fire conditions, Captain Long removed the unconscious victim by dragging her to the front door of the dwelling while staying low under the superheated smoke and advancing flames. He was assisted in removing the victim from the doorway to the dwelling's front porch area by bystanders as the five firefighters from the Pageland Fire Department's Engine 2 arrived; and

Whereas, the Pageland Fire Engine 2 crew assisted Captain Long with removing the victim to the front yard area and began basic life support treatment of the female patient and began aggressive fire-attack operations simultaneously. An ambulance crew arrived and gave advanced life-support treatment to the rescued victim; and

Whereas, the Pageland Engine 2 crew advanced fire-attack hose lines for an aggressive interior attack and completed fire control and primary search of the dwelling for victims. No other victims were located, and the fire was brought under control in less than five minutes by the Pageland Fire Department's Engine 2 crew and units from the Highpoint fire district; and

Whereas, the victim with life-threatening injuries was transported to the hospital, was subsequently transferred to a regional burn center, later discharged from the burn center, and returned to her community for continued recovery. She reportedly has made a full recovery; and

Whereas, Captain Steve Long has served with honor and distinction as a dedicated servant leader in the Pageland Volunteer Fire Department for over thirty-four years, as a Captain for seventeen of those years. He and his beloved wife, Linda Long, have two fine sons and three adoring grandchildren; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives values the dedicated service and sacrifice that firefighters like Steve Long make to protect citizens in the Palmetto State, at the risk of their own personal safety, and the members salute his heroism that saved a life. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Pageland Fire Department Captain Steve Long for his heroic actions of responding without regard for his personal safety to save the life of a citizen in Pageland.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Captain Steve Long.
