A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE SAMUEL JERVEY DUPRÉ, JR., OF CHARLESTON COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HIM A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Samuel Jervey DuPré, Jr., of Charleston County will celebrate his one hundredth birthday on February 25, 2012; and
Whereas, the son of Samuel J. and Hallie Mathews DuPré, Samuel Jervey DuPré, Jr., was born in Glendale on February 25, 1912, in the early part of the twentieth century, and he has been witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that have come to this nation from that time into the twenty-first century; and
Whereas, in 1943, he married his beloved Blanche Kinsey Evans, God blessing their union with three children, Mildred, Jervey, and Thomas; and
Whereas, in preparation for his career, Samuel DuPré graduated from The Citadel in 1935 and received a postgraduate degree in education from Columbia University. He served as principal of Pine Street Elementary School in Spartanburg for thirty-seven years and was responsible for many innovative educational initiatives; and
Whereas, he showed his love for children in other arenas, as well. Beginning in the early 1930s, Mr. DuPré served many years as an instructor of waterfront activities at Camp Pinnacle for Boys and remained affiliated with the girls and boys camps into his 80s; and
Whereas, in addition, he was a member of the South Carolina Football Association and refereed high school football games for a quarter century; and
Whereas, not one to let advancing years slow him down, Mr. DuPré walked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine at age sixty-one, traveled six continents with The Citadel Alumni Association, and visited all fifty states after retirement; and
Whereas, a man of faith, he is a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent and is a lifelong supporter of York Place, the Episcopal Church Home for Children; and
Whereas, to mark Samuel Jervey DuPré's centennial birthday, his family and friends will hold a celebratory event in his honor on February 25, 2012; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to honor this son of South Carolina at the celebration of his one hundredth birthday and joins with his family and friends in congratulating him on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Samuel Jervey DuPré, Jr., of Charleston County on the occasion of his one hundredth birthday, and wish him a joyous birthday celebration and continued health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Samuel Jervey DuPré, Jr.
