A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE TRINITY BAPTIST CHURCH OF COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR A CENTURY OF SERVICE TO GOD AND THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, having been founded in 1921, Trinity Baptist Church of Columbia is celebrating its historic one hundredth anniversary in 2021; and

Whereas, one hundred years ago, on July 14, 1921, the executive board of the Gethsemane Association granted Deacon Jesse Archie, Deacon John Robinson, Deacon W.R. Lee, and Deacon Willie Mayo of Second Nazareth Baptist Church the right to form a new church, to be called Trinity Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Trinity Baptist was duly organized with twenty-eight members from Second Nazareth Baptist Church, and they began worship in a small building on Elmwood Avenue within the Waverly community. The Reverend William Gordon was elected as Trinity's first pastor, and the church was incorporated on September 12, 1921; and

Whereas, through the years, God has continued to bless Trinity and the community it serves. This vibrant church now has a congregation of more than seven hundred active members, shepherded by Dr. Thurmond Bowens, Jr., who is now serving as the church's twelfth pastor. Dr. Bowens has twenty-four years of service; and

Whereas, the church's Trinity Education Community Conference Center assists the congregation in its mission to continue being "A Reflection of Christ to the Community"; and

Whereas, located on a 3.69-acre campus, Trinity continues to stand as a symbol of God's saving grace, mighty power, and everlasting love; and

Whereas, to mark its milestone centennial anniversary, the church will hold a special celebration on Sunday, September 12, 2021; and

Whereas, Trinity Baptist has been a beacon of light and a community worship center in the Columbia area for one hundred years, and, God willing, will continue its godly heritage for many more years of worship and service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Trinity Baptist Church of Columbia on the occasion of its historic one hundredth anniversary and commend the church for a century of service to God and the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Trinity Baptist Church.
