A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. EDITH CHILDS OF GREENWOOD COUNTY FOR HER LIFETIME OF ACHIEVEMENTS AND SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF HER COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Mrs. Edith Childs will receive well-deserved honors for her life of service and accomplishments on January 16, 2012, at the Morris Chapel Baptist Church Family Life Center; and

Whereas, this 1967 graduate of Brewer High School received a Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate from Greenwood County Vocational Facility in 1974 and retired after thirty-two years of service at Self Regional Health Care; and

Whereas, the wife of Charles Childs and proud mother of three outstanding children: Linda, Jerome, and Lamont, she is currently serving the citizens of Greenwood in her fifth term as a member of the Greenwood County Council; and

Whereas, she earned a degree in criminal justice from Piedmont Technical College in 1999, and she also has completed several levels at the Institute of Government for County Officials; and

Whereas, a devoted member of Morris Chapel Baptist Church, Mrs. Childs serves as the secretary of the missionary society and the coordinator for Little River Baptist Association Health Care Ministry; and

Whereas, among her many community responsibilities, she serves as the chair of the County Council Recreation Committee, a member of the Martin Luther King Choir, and a life member and Golden Heritage member of the NAACP; and

Whereas, she has organized, led, founded, and sponsored a myriad of programs benefitting her community, and in 2011, she authored her life story, A Southern Black Woman Beats the Odds; and

Whereas, in 2000, she received the Community Award from the Iota Upsilon Omega Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., and in 2011, she was named the Woman of Wisdom for Little River Missionary Baptist Association and also received the Woman of Excellence Award; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life of service that Mrs. Edith Childs has given to her community and for the pride and recognition she has brought to the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs. Edith Childs of Greenwood County for her lifetime of achievements and service to the citizens of her community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Edith Childs.
