A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF RUBY VIRGINIA "GINGER" SHAVER WATSON OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Ruby Virginia "Ginger" Shaver Watson at the age of eighty on January 29, 2021; and
Whereas, born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on September 12, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Edison Shaver and Roberta Vernon Shaver Franklin, and she graduated from the Curriculum for Dental Hygiene at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry; and
Whereas, when Ginger Franklin married her beloved sweetheart, Dr. Robert (Bob) M. Watson, Jr., the couple moved to England with the United States Air Force, and upon their return, the family moved to Spartanburg; and
Whereas, in preparation for a career in teaching, she earned a bachelor's degree magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina Upstate and a master's degree in education from Converse College; and
Whereas, Mrs. Watson taught first grade/K5 in Spartanburg School District 6 at Anderson Mill Elementary School and Fairforest Elementary School where she was Teacher of the Year; and
Whereas, an avid bridge player, watercolor artist, and lifelong cat lover, she was a member of Episcopal Church of the Advent, where she served as co-chair of the 2009 Breaking Bread Cookbook Committee, and was a member of the Women's Lunch Bunch Circle and the weekly watercolor class; and
Whereas, together with her husband of sixty years, she reared three fine children: Wende Sweat, Leigh Watson, and Ashley Watson. Her children blessed her with the affection of three grandchildren: Watson Sweat; Riley Sweat, Jr.; and Cayce Sweat; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Ginger Watson and for the example of service and kindness she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Ruby Virginia "Ginger" Shaver Watson of Spartanburg County and extend their deepest sympathy to her large and loving family and her many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ruby Virginia "Ginger" Shaver Watson.
