A RESOLUTION

Designating April 11, 2011, as "Lincoln University Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Founded in April 1854, Lincoln University has

4

thrived as our Commonwealth's and our nation's oldest

5

historically black institution of higher education and has

6

attained distinction as part of the Commonwealth System of

7

Higher Education; and

8

WHEREAS, Lincoln University, originally known as the Ashmun

9

Institute, was chartered to provide instruction in science,

10

literature, the liberal arts, classics and theology to male

11

students of African descent; and

12

WHEREAS, The Reverend John Miller Dickey, a Presbyterian

13

minister, and his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson, a Quaker,

14

established the institute in keeping with their commitment to

15

the classical tradition and equal opportunity in education; and

16

WHEREAS, The first institution of its kind anywhere in the

17

world and one of only a few church-affiliated black colleges to

18

prosper before the Civil War, the institute was renamed Lincoln

University in 1866 in memory of slain President Abraham Lincoln;

2

and

3

WHEREAS, In 1950, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a world-class

4

collector of French early modern and Post-Impressionist

5

paintings, granted Lincoln University certain rights relating to

6

the nomination of prospective Barnes Foundation trustees; and

7

WHEREAS, Women students were first admitted in 1952; and

8

WHEREAS, Dr. Ivory V. Nelson, a chemist and author of

9

technical publications in analytical chemistry, is Lincoln

10

University's 12th president; and

11

WHEREAS, With a uniquely interracial and international

12

enrollment of more than 2,000 students, Lincoln University is

13

advancing its legacy in the 21st century at the Lincoln Campus

14

in southern Chester County, at the Center for Graduate Studies

15

and Continuing Education in Center City, Philadelphia, and at

16

international study-abroad sites; and

17

WHEREAS, Lincoln University provides notable community

18

outreach and continuing education programs and offers 46

19

undergraduate degree-granting programs in the arts and sciences,

20

graduate degree-granting programs in human services, reading,

21

education, mathematics, administration and school administration

22

and preprofessional programs in dentistry, engineering, nursing,

23

veterinary science, law and medicine; and

24

WHEREAS, The Lincoln University Barnes Foundation Center of

25

Excellence in Visual Arts is a collaborative degree-granting

26

program in studio art and museum studies; and

27

WHEREAS, The Center of Excellence in Mass Communications

28

focuses on journalism and broadcast media technology; and

29

WHEREAS, The Center of Excellence in Grand Research

30

Educational Awareness and Training (GREAT) for Minority Health

promotes partnerships and initiatives in minority health and

2

health disparities; and

3

WHEREAS, The Center of Excellence in Teacher Education and

4

Urban Pedagogy offers advanced training to produce certified

5

teachers with distinctive qualifications in elementary and

6

secondary educational reform; and

7

WHEREAS, The Center of Excellence in Business and Information

8

Technology grounds future entrepreneurs in principles of

9

accounting and finance and fosters strategic public-private

10

partnerships; and 

11

WHEREAS, Lincoln University features a distinguished faculty

12

of highly motivated and skilled professors, with 77% of faculty

13

members having earned doctorate degrees; and

14

WHEREAS, Through Lincoln University's generous financial

15

supporters, approximately 93% of students receive multiple

16

sources of grant, loan or scholarship aid; and

17

WHEREAS, Lincoln University's proud tradition of

18

international study, research and exchange programs dates to

19

1859, when new Lincoln University graduates returned to Liberia

20

to serve as teachers; and

21

WHEREAS, Having set the standard for all institutions of

22

higher education when issuing the nation's first alumni

23

publication in 1884, Lincoln University continues to enjoy

24

extraordinary alumni support; and

25

WHEREAS, Lincoln University is expanding its athletic

26

programs, with an ambitious athletic facilities renovation

27

project nearing completion and with the Lions transitioning from

28

National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III status to

29

Division II status; therefore be it

30

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate April 11, 2011, as
