A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Philadelphia Phillies on winning the 2008

2

Major League Baseball World Series.

3

WHEREAS, On October 29, 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies

4

defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to win the 2008 Major League

5

Baseball World Series; and

6

WHEREAS, The 4-to-3 Phillies' victory in Game 5 of the Fall

7

Classic secured a World Series title for Philadelphia for the

8

first time since 1980 and for the second time in team history;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, Philadelphia sports fans have consistently

11

demonstrated their devotion to Philadelphia teams throughout the

12

past 25 years; and

13

WHEREAS, Since taking the helm as manager of the Phillies in

14

2005, Charlie Manuel has guided the players to become the best

15

team in Major League Baseball; and

WHEREAS, Twenty-four-year-old pitcher Cole Hamels was named

2

the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for both the National League

3

Championship Series and the World Series, with a 4-0 record and

4

1.80 earned run average in the post season; and

5

WHEREAS, Starting pitchers, Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Joe

6

Blanton and Souderton native, Jamie Moyer, delivered outstanding

7

performances throughout the post season; and

8

WHEREAS, The Phillies were led by a talented and tough group

9

of players including: 2006 MVP Ryan Howard; All-Star Chase

10

Utley; 2007 MVP and 2007 and 2008 Gold Glove winner Jimmy

11

Rollins; third baseman Pedro Feliz; veteran outfielder Pat

12

Burrell; 2008 Gold Glove winner, the "Flyin' Hawaiian" Shane

13

Victorino; outfielder Jayson Werth; catcher Carlos Ruiz; and

14

pitcher Brad Lidge; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate the Philadelphia

16

Phillies on winning the 2008 Major League Baseball World Series.
