A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the week of October 10 through 16, 2010, as "Medal

2

of Honor Grove Week" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor is our nation’s highest military

4

honor and has been bestowed upon fewer than 3,500 individuals

5

since its inception in 1862; and

6

WHEREAS, The Freedoms Foundation's Medal of Honor Grove in

7

Schuylkill Township, Chester County, is the nation’s oldest

8

memorial site dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients; and

9

WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor Grove was dedicated in 1964

10

through the work of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Omar

11

Bradley and others; and

12

WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor Grove consists of 52 acres, with

13

one acre for each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto

14

Rico; and

15

WHEREAS, The site for each state features an obelisk and

16

medal plaques individually honoring each Medal of Honor

recipient dating back to the Civil War; and

2

WHEREAS, The site for this Commonwealth features the names of

3

346 Medal of Honor recipients, each of whom distinguished

4

himself "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk

5

of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in

6

an action against an enemy of the United States"; and

7

WHEREAS, At the 1964 dedication of the Medal of Honor Grove,

8

it was made clear that the Medal of Honor Grove was in

9

perpetuity to remain a place of honor and respect for Medal of

10

Honor recipients; and

11

WHEREAS, In recent years the Medal of Honor Grove has fallen

12

into disrepair and been subject to numerous purchase offers from

13

developers; and

14

WHEREAS, This fall the Medal of Honor Grove has been returned

15

to a condition befitting its purpose thanks to the efforts of

16

more than 1,000 volunteers, including Medal of Honor recipients

17

retired Sergeant Sammy L. Davis, retired Major General James E.

18

Livingston and Pennsylvania native retired Colonel Walter J.

19

Marm; and

20

WHEREAS, In recent months, the President of the United States

21

presented posthumously the Medal of Honor to two Pennsylvania

22

soldiers, Chief Master Sergeant Richard L. Etchberger of Berks

23

County and Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller of Dauphin County,

24

and to one living soldier, Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta;

25

therefore be it

26

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of October 10

27

through 16, 2010, as "Medal of Honor Grove Week" in

28

Pennsylvania; and be it further

29

RESOLVED, That the Senate call upon all those involved with

30

the Medal of Honor Grove to provide it the proper and perpetual

care and respect due those to whom our nation has bestowed its

highest military honor.
