A RESOLUTION

Designating the week of September 26 through October 2, 2010, as

2

"ConKerr Cancer Miles of Pillowcase Smiles Week" in

3

Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, ConKerr Cancer will provide miles of pillowcase

5

smiles across this Commonwealth during the week of September 26;

6

and

7

WHEREAS, ConKerr Cancer is an organization founded by Gavin

8

and Cindy Kerr after their son Ryan was diagnosed with a rare

9

bone cancer at the age of 12; and

10

WHEREAS, The organization provides bright and whimsical

11

pillowcases for ill children to brighten their hospital rooms;

12

and

13

WHEREAS, In just three years, ConKerr Cancer has provided

14

more than 225,000 pillowcases to children in 204 hospitals

15

across North America and South Africa; and

16

WHEREAS, Numerous church groups, sewing circles, schools and

17

fabric stores have joined the organization in giving sick

children reason to smile; and

WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania, ConKerr Cancer serves children at

3

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Children's Hospital of

4

Pittsburgh, Janet Weis Children's Hospital at Geisinger, St.

5

Christopher's Children's Hospital, Shriner's Hospital, Penn

6

State Hershey Medical Center, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Reading

7

Medical Center and looks to expand; and

8

WHEREAS, The National Cancer Institute appropriately invests

9

more than $4.8 billion a year on cancer research, but

10

significantly less than that is spent on helping families cope

11

with the terrifying experience of having an ill child; and

12

WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease

13

among children in the United States between infancy and 15 years

14

of age; and

15

WHEREAS, More than 8,500 children under 15 years of age are

16

diagnosed with pediatric cancer each year in the United States

17

with the average age being two years of age; therefore be it

18

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the importance of raising

19

awareness of pediatric cancer and also the importance of

20

providing support to families coping with their children's

21

illness and to the children themselves; and be it further

22

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of September 26

23

through October 2, 2010, as "ConKerr Cancer Miles of Pillowcase

24

Smiles Week" in Pennsylvania.
