A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the month of October 2010 as "Polish American

2

Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, This year marks the 402nd anniversary of Polish

4

settlers arriving in the United States of America; and

5

WHEREAS, People of Polish heritage will mark the 231st

6

anniversary of the death of General Casimir Pulaski, father of

7

the American cavalry, and the 71st anniversary of the invasion

8

of Poland and outbreak of World War II; and

9

WHEREAS, People of Polish heritage have contributed greatly

10

to global advancement and advancement of the United States and

11

Pennsylvania in particular in the 402 years since the first

12

Polish immigrants settled here; and

13

WHEREAS, People of Polish heritage have demonstrated

14

exceptional skills in the fields of acting, accounting, art,

15

dentistry, education, engineering, entertainment, general labor,

16

government, law, literature, management, mathematics, medicine,

the military, music, philosophy, poetry, sports and many other

2

endeavors; and

3

WHEREAS, Polish people are recognized for their strong work

4

ethic and outstanding achievements; and

5

WHEREAS, Polish notables include Ignacy Jan Paderewski, one

6

of the most famous and popular pianists of all time and an

7

advocate for Polish freedom, who was born 150 years ago in

8

Warsaw and who died in 1941 in New York City; and

9

WHEREAS, Other Polish notables include Revolutionary War

10

heroes Casimir Pulaski and Thaddeus Kosciuszko; Leopold

11

Stokowski, a renowned international conductor; Zbigniew

12

Brzezinski, National Security Advisor to President Carter; and

13

Edmund Muskie, a United States Senator from Maine; and

14

WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians of Polish heritage have made many

15

contributions to our nation; and

16

WHEREAS, These Pennsylvanians include Cardinal John Krol of

17

Philadelphia, baseball great Stan Musial of Donora and singer

18

Bobby Vinton of Canonsburg; and

19

WHEREAS, The Polish people have many reasons to be proud of

20

and to celebrate their heritage, culture and the achievements of

21

their people; and

22

WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians are grateful for the many

23

contributions of Poland and its citizens to our Commonwealth;

24

therefore be it

25

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2010

26

as "Polish American Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania.
