| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of October 2012 as "Bullying Awareness |
2 | Month" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Bullying is intentional, repeated behavior by one or |
4 | more people which can harm others physically and emotionally; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, Bullying is a type of abuse which can take many |
7 | forms and crosses all classes, ages, religions and areas without |
8 | discrimination; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The Center for Safe Schools examined bullying levels |
10 | in grades 3 through 12 in 25 counties and reported that bullying |
11 | is most common during elementary and middle school years, but |
12 | also occurs in high school; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In a 2009 National Center for Education Statistics |
14 | study of students ages 12 to 18 years of age, slightly less than |
15 | one-third of students reported that they had been bullied in |
16 | school; and |
17 | WHEREAS, In 2009, the Office of Juvenile Justice and |

1 | Delinquency Prevention reported that, among children and youth |
2 | age 17 years of age and younger, about one in five reported |
3 | being physically bullied and about three in ten reported being |
4 | teased or emotionally bullied in their lifetime; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In a 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention |
6 | (CDC) study of youth in grades 9 through 12, 21.2% of females |
7 | and 18.7% of males reported being bullied on school property in |
8 | the previous 12 months; therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2012 |
10 | as "Bullying Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. |
