A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the month of September 2012 as "Thyroid Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Thyroid cancer is the fastest growing cancer in both

4

men and women and is the most common endocrine cancer; and

5

WHEREAS, Thyroid cancer occurs in individuals of all age

6

groups; and

7

WHEREAS, The greatest number of cases occur in patients

8

between the ages of 25 and 60; and

9

WHEREAS, Thyroid cancer occurs about three times more often

10

in women than in men; and

11

WHEREAS, The chances of being diagnosed with thyroid cancer

12

have risen in recent years and have more than doubled since

13

1990; and

14

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there

15

will be approximately 56,460 new cases of thyroid cancer in the

16

United States in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Studies have shown that exposure to radiation is a

2

proven risk factor for thyroid cancer, and sources of such

3

radiation include certain medical treatments; and

4

WHEREAS, Other risk factors for thyroid cancer include a

5

family history and a diet that is low in iodine; and

6

WHEREAS, Thyroid cancer symptoms can include a lump or nodule

7

in the front of the neck, hoarseness or difficulty speaking,

8

swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing or breathing and pain

9

in the neck or throat; and

10

WHEREAS, Research has shown that thyroid cancer is highly

11

treatable when detected early; and

12

WHEREAS, Observing "Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month" provides

13

an opportunity to enhance thyroid cancer awareness and to

14

highlight the importance of consulting a physician when symptoms

15

of thyroid cancer occur; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the Senate, in recognition of the importance

17

of thyroid cancer awareness, designate September 2012 as

18

"Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
