A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for its efforts

2

relating to the 2010 United States Census.

3

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded January 13,

4

1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University who wanted to

5

use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and

6

provide assistance to persons in need; and

7

WHEREAS, The first public act performed by the Delta Founders

8

involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in

9

Washington, DC, in March 1913; and

10

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta is a private, nonprofit

11

organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support

12

through established programs in local communities throughout the

13

world; and

14

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta has initiated more than 200,000

15

predominantly black, college-educated women and currently has

16

more than 950 chapters located in the United States, England,

17

Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda,

18

the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea; and

WHEREAS, Within Pennsylvania, there are 11 alumnae chapters:

2

Allentown Alumnae, Chester Alumnae, Erie Alumnae, Harrisburg

3

Alumnae, Lancaster Alumnae, Philadelphia Alumnae, Pittsburgh

4

Alumnae, Quaker City Alumnae, State College/Bellefonte Alumnae,

5

Valley Forge Alumnae and York Alumnae. The largest chapters

6

throughout this Commonwealth are Philadelphia Alumnae,

7

Pittsburgh Alumnae, Quaker City Alumnae, Valley Forge Alumnae,

8

Harrisburg Alumnae and Chester Alumnae; and

9

WHEREAS, Within Pennsylvania there are 18 collegiate

10

chapters: Delta Tau (Cheyney University), Epsilon Delta (Temple

11

University), Epsilon Gamma (The Pennsylvania State University),

12

Epsilon Phi (City-Wide Chapter), Gamma (University of

13

Pennsylvania), Lambda Gamma (Millersville University), Mu

14

(University of Pittsburgh), Nu Nu (Shippensburg University), Rho

15

Alpha (West Chester University), Rho Iota (Bloomsburg

16

University), Rho Omicron (Slippery Rock University), Rho Phi,

17

Rho Pi (Edinboro University), Tau Beta (Indiana University),

18

Theta (Duquesne University), Theta Beta (City-Wide Chapter),

19

Upsilon Delta (Dickinson University) and Zeta Omega (Lincoln

20

University); and

21

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta is committed to providing

22

leadership and increasing the participation of citizens in the

23

Census 2010, through its partnership with the United States

24

Census Bureau; and

25

WHEREAS, The sorority initiated the phrase, "Don't be Counted

26

Out" as a subtheme, which was used by chapters throughout the

27

country in their Census-related initiatives; and

28

WHEREAS, The work of eight of Delta Sigma Theta's chapters,

29

located in the western, northwestern, central and southeastern

30

regions of Pennsylvania, demonstrates how the importance of the

Census was emphasized by local chapters. Coordinating and

2

participating in activities that included rallies, meetings and

3

presentations, the chapters provided information and distributed

4

Census facts and promotional items to "hard-to-reach"

5

populations of African Americans, Hispanics and college

6

students, as they encouraged participation; and

7

WHEREAS, Collectively, the eight chapters reached more than

8

7,900 citizens and residents in Pennsylvania regarding the 2010

9

United States Census; therefore be it

10

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the Delta Sigma Theta

11

Sorority for its efforts relating to the 2010 United States

12

Census; and be it further

13

RESOLVED, That the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is encouraged

14

to continue its participation in the 2010 United States Census.
