A RESOLUTION

Recognizing February 14, 2012, as "National Socks for the

2

Homeless Day" in Pennsylvania and encouraging all citizens to

3

contribute to organizations that provide socks for the

4

homeless.

WHEREAS, According to HUD in 2010 there were 649,879 homeless

6

individuals across America; and

7

WHEREAS, About 15,096 homeless individuals reside in

8

Pennsylvania, including approximately 5,798 in Philadelphia,

9

1,136 in Pittsburgh and 365 in Harrisburg; and

10

WHEREAS, A pair of socks is a basic need for a person to have

11

and a lack of socks can lead to frostbite and blisters as well

12

as ulcer formations and inevitable loss of limb and amputation;

13

and

14

WHEREAS, Clothing donations to the homeless rarely include

15

much-needed socks; and

16

WHEREAS, The need for clean, dry socks is imperative to

17

decrease the likelihood of fungal and bacterial infection that

18

can be harbored in a shoe liner and then can infect a person,

19

leading to cellulitis and skin infection; and

WHEREAS, The need for socks is basic in that they protect the

2

feet from the internal structures of shoes as well as helping

3

insulate the feet from cold surfaces, especially for those who

4

deal with rheumatoid arthritis; and

5

WHEREAS, The simplicity of socks can make so much difference

6

for the homeless individual; and

7

WHEREAS, For children, new socks can mean not having

8

splinters and infected fungal nails after borrowing other kids'

9

shoes or using donated hand-me-downs without a barrier like a

10

sock to protect them from contagious agents; and

11

WHEREAS, Single mothers and children who have one pair of

12

socks, which can last only so long, are given back dignity when

13

they own new, nontattered socks; and

14

WHEREAS, The Joy of Sox was created to accept and manage

15

donations from all over the United States; and

16

WHEREAS, The Joy of Sox continues to raise awareness of the

17

plight of homeless individuals and the medical problems

18

associated with being homeless and sockless; therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize February 14, 2012, as

20

"National Socks for the Homeless Day" in Pennsylvania and

21

encourage all citizens to contribute to The Joy of Sox and other

22

organizations that provide socks for the homeless.
