| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Expressing sadness on the passing of Miep Gies and honoring her |
2 | memory. |
3 | WHEREAS, Miep Gies was born on February 15, 1909; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Miep Gies passed away January 11, 2010, at 100 years |
5 | of age; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Miep Gies was the last surviving protector of Anne |
7 | Frank, whose diary, "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" has |
8 | been read by millions of Pennsylvania school children over the |
9 | last half-century; and |
10 | WHEREAS, History's most heroic acts often have been performed |
11 | not by leaders in government, education or religion, but by |
12 | ordinary individuals with extraordinary courage; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Miep Gies, her late husband Jan Gies and three |
14 | fellow protectors of Anne Frank risked death by protecting Anne |
15 | Frank, her family and four other Dutch Jews, thus demonstrating |
16 | a supreme level of humanity and selflessness; and |
17 | WHEREAS, "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" will |

1 | continue to be read by and inspire Pennsylvania school children |
2 | for decades to come; therefore be it |
3 | RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life and memory of Miep |
4 | Gies, whose life will forever serve as a testament to mankind's |
5 | potential. |
