A RESOLUTION

Designating November 17, 2011, as "Children's Grief Awareness

2

Day" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Children who have had a loved one die, especially a

4

close family member, can carry that loss within them forever,

5

and it sometimes causes confusion in their minds as to why their

6

loved one was taken away; and

7

WHEREAS, Highmark Caring Place is a center for grieving

8

children, adolescents and their families, and there are four

9

Caring Place centers throughout this Commonwealth; and

10

WHEREAS, Some families regard Highmark Caring Place centers

11

as the salvation of their family unit, a place where, above all,

12

they can find comfort, understanding and help in time of grief;

13

and

14

WHEREAS, "Children's Grief Awareness Day" was begun in this

15

Commonwealth by the Highmark Caring Place in 2008 in order to

16

help others understand the impact of death on children and their

need for support; and

2

WHEREAS, "Children's Grief Awareness Day" is observed every

3

year on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, immediately preceding

4

the winter holidays, which can be a particularly difficult time

5

for grieving children; and

6

WHEREAS, A simple way to participate is to encourage as many

7

people as possible to wear blue on that day as a symbol of

8

support for "Children's Grief Awareness Day"; and

9

WHEREAS, The Caring Team for Children is an initiative of

10

Highmark Caring Place which encompasses hundreds of schools,

11

businesses and community partners working together to increase a

12

common awareness of the needs of grieving children; and

13

WHEREAS, This year, on November 17, 2011, Caring Team for

14

Children schools, along with children and adults from all walks

15

of life across Pennsylvania will join together with thousands of

16

others nationally and internationally to show their support for

17

grieving children by participating in "Children's Grief

18

Awareness Day"; and

19

WHEREAS, The Senate applauds the work being accomplished by

20

the Highmark Caring Place and the Caring Team for Children

21

schools across this Commonwealth; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate November 17, 2011, as

23

"Children's Grief Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
