| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Congratulating the Philadelphia Phillies on its successes during |
2 | the 2009 Major League baseball season. |
3 | WHEREAS, In 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies won the Major |
4 | League Baseball World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays; and |
5 | WHEREAS, This achievement was the team's second championship, |
6 | the first having been in 1980; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The 2009 season was another remarkable season for |
8 | the Philadelphia Phillies; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The team took the National League Division Series |
10 | against the Colorado Rockies in a 3-1 game win; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies earned a further victory |
12 | against the Los Angeles Dodgers by a 4-1 game win in the |
13 | National League Championship Series; and |
14 | WHEREAS, By beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National |
15 | League Championship Series, the Philadelphia Phillies became the |
16 | first team to repeat as National League champions since the |

1 | 1995–1996 Atlanta Braves; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies became the first World |
3 | Series champion team to return to the World Series the next year |
4 | since the 2000–2001 New York Yankees; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies also became the first |
6 | major professional sports champion team from Philadelphia to |
7 | return to its league's championship series the next year since |
8 | the 1975–1976 Philadelphia Flyers went to the Stanley Cup |
9 | Finals; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies returned to the series |
11 | hoping to be consecutive, repeat World Series champions for the |
12 | first time in franchise history; and |
13 | WHEREAS, After winning Game 1, by a score of 6-1, and Game 5, |
14 | by a score of 8-6, in the 2009 World Series, the Philadelphia |
15 | Phillies lost the title to the New York Yankees; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies deserve the highest praise |
17 | from the Commonwealth for the team's successes during the 2009 |
18 | season; therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate the Philadelphia |
20 | Phillies on its successes during the 2009 Major League baseball |
21 | season. |
