A RESOLUTION

Designating Friday, February 4, 2011, as "National Wear Red Day"

2

in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are the nation's leading cause

4

of death, and stroke is the fourth leading cause of death; and

5

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of more than

6

421,000 American females each year, approximately one death per

7

minute; and

8

WHEREAS, Each year, 52% of all deaths due to cardiovascular

9

disease and 60% of stroke deaths occur in females; and

10

WHEREAS, Too many women die each year because they are

11

unaware that heart disease is their number one killer; and

12

WHEREAS, In 2007, the direct and indirect cost of

13

cardiovascular diseases in the United States, including stroke,

14

was estimated to be $286 billion; and

15

WHEREAS, Nearly as many women die of heart disease, stroke

16

and all other cardiovascular diseases than the next four leading

causes of death combined, including all cancers; and

2

WHEREAS, Only 16% of women surveyed in 2009 identified

3

cardiovascular disease as the greatest health problem facing

4

them; and

5

WHEREAS, February is designated as American Heart Month; and

6

WHEREAS, Go Red For Women® is the American Heart

7

Association's national call to increase awareness about heart

8

disease, the leading cause of death for women, and to inspire

9

women to take charge of their heart health; and

10

WHEREAS, All women should learn their own personal risk for

11

heart disease, using tools such as the American Heart

12

Association's My Life Check, Go Red For Women® Heart CheckUp and

13

Go Red For Women® Better U, and by talking to their health care

14

provider; and

15

WHEREAS, Making the right choices relating to proper

16

nutrition, physical activity and other health lifestyle choices

17

are essential to living a heart-healthy life; therefore be it

18

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate Friday, February 4, 2011,

19

as "National Wear Red Day" in Pennsylvania in recognition of the

20

importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke

21

and urge all citizens to show their support for women and the

22

fight against heart disease by commemorating this day by the

23

wearing of the color red.
