| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of October 2011 as "Bullying Awareness |
2 | Month" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Bullying is intentional, repeated behavior by one or |
4 | more people which can harm others physically and emotionally; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, Bullying is a type of abuse which can take many |
7 | forms and crosses all classes, ages, religions and areas without |
8 | discrimination; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Bullying is most common during elementary and middle |
10 | school years but also occurs in high school; and |
11 | WHEREAS, In a 2009 National Center for Education Statistics |
12 | study of students ages 12 to 18 years, slightly less than one- |
13 | third of students reported that they had been bullied in school; |
14 | and |
15 | WHEREAS, In 2009, the Office of Juvenile Justice and |
16 | Delinquency Prevention reported that among children and youth |
17 | ages 17 and younger about one in five reported being physically |

1 | bullied, and about three in ten reported being teased or |
2 | emotionally bullied in their lifetime; and |
3 | WHEREAS, In a 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention |
4 | (CDC) study of youth in grades 9 through 12, 21.2% of females |
5 | and 18.7% of males reported being bullied on school property in |
6 | the previous 12 months; therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2011 |
8 | as "Bullying Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. |
