A RESOLUTION

Designating October 2009 as "National Physical Therapy Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, What we now celebrate as "National Physical Therapy

4

Month" began in 1981 as National Physical Therapy Week and was

5

celebrated in June; and

6

WHEREAS, In 1992, National Physical Therapy Week became

7

"National Physical Therapy Month"; and

8

WHEREAS, "National Physical Therapy Month" has grown in

9

popularity over the years and it is now a recognized celebration

10

in the National Health Observances Calendar; and

11

WHEREAS, "National Physical Therapy Month" provides an

12

opportunity for physical therapists and physical therapist

13

assistants nationwide to educate their communities about who

14

physical therapists are and what they can do; and

15

WHEREAS, Physical therapists are experts in restoring and

16

improving the motion that is so crucial to a patient's well-

being; and

2

WHEREAS, Physical therapists provide the following services

3

for their patients:

4

(1)  improve mobility and quality of life, in many cases

5

without surgery or prescription drugs;

6

(2)  apply their intensive education and clinical

7

experience to restore motion to the patient's life;

8

(3)  teach patients how to prevent or manage their health

9

condition so that they will achieve an improved quality of

10

life;

11

and

12

WHEREAS, Most physical therapy education programs graduate

13

doctors of physical therapy; and

14

WHEREAS, During the month of October, many physical

15

therapists will be conducting open houses, fitness walks,

16

seminars and other special events; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2009

18

as "National Physical Therapy Month" in Pennsylvania.
