A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of November 2009 as "Pancreatic Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, More than 37,000 people will be diagnosed with

4

pancreatic cancer this year in the United States and 34,000 will

5

die from the disease; and

6

WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest cancer and the

7

fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States; and

8

WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer will cause approximately 1,920

9

deaths in this Commonwealth; and

10

WHEREAS, Seventy-five percent of pancreatic cancer patients

11

die within the first year of their diagnosis and 95% of

12

pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years; and

13

WHEREAS, There is no cure for pancreatic cancer and there

14

have been no significant improvements in early detection,

15

treatment methods or survival rates in the last 25 years; and

16

WHEREAS, When symptoms of pancreatic cancer present

themselves it is usually too late for an optimistic prognosis,

2

and the average life expectancy of those diagnosed with

3

metastasis disease is only three to six months; and

4

WHEREAS, Incidence of pancreatic cancer is 20% to 30% higher

5

in men than in women and 40% to 50% higher in African Americans

6

than in other ethnic groups; and

7

WHEREAS, The Federal Government invests less money in

8

pancreatic cancer research than it does in any of the other

9

leading cancers; and

10

WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of

11

this Commonwealth are enhanced as a direct result of increased

12

awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early

13

detection, causes and effective treatment; and

14

WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the first

15

and only national patient advocacy organization that serves the

16

pancreatic cancer community in Pennsylvania and nationwide by

17

focusing its efforts on public policy, research funding, patient

18

services and public awareness and education related to

19

developing effective treatments and a cure for pancreatic

20

cancer; and

21

WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and its

22

affiliates support those patients currently battling pancreatic

23

cancer, as well as those who have lost their lives to the

24

disease, and are committed to nothing less than a cure; and

25

WHEREAS, Fund a Cure for Pancreatic Cancer, a Pennsylvania-

26

based nonprofit advocacy group, is dedicated to increasing

27

funding for pancreatic cancer research and to advocating for the

28

allocation of appropriate research funding from the Federal

29

Government to the National Cancer Institute to discover and

30

develop enhanced detection techniques and improved treatment

methods for pancreatic cancer; therefore be it

2

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of November

3

2009 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania in

4

support of the goals of educating the citizens of this

5

Commonwealth about the lethality of pancreatic cancer, how

6

quickly it claims the lives of those afflicted and the lack of

7

adequate funding towards lifesaving research and detection

8

methods.
