A RESOLUTION

Designating October 15, 2011, as "Pennsylvania Wine Day."

2

WHEREAS, Today, the growth of Pennsylvania grapes occurs

3

thanks to the tireless efforts of generations of Pennsylvanians

4

who played instrumental roles in the founding of this nation's

5

great wine industry; and

6

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's 140-plus wineries have come

7

together to create one of Pennsylvania's fastest-growing and

8

most vibrant agritourism industries; and

9

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to 11 unique wine trails which,

10

for the first time in State history, attracted more than one

11

million visitors to Pennsylvania winery tasting rooms in 2010;

12

and

13

WHEREAS, The growth of the State's wine industry continues at

14

a record pace, with the number of licensed wineries in

15

Pennsylvania increasing from 27 in 1981 to more than 140 today,

16

helping to make Pennsylvania the nation's seventh largest wine-

17

producing state; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's winery owners and operators have

2

devoted their lives to improving their craft and, through their

3

hard work and dedication, have made Pennsylvania's wine industry

4

one of the most successful in the nation; and

5

WHEREAS, October serves as an important month of harvest for

6

Pennsylvania grape growers, and harvest time provides an ideal

7

opportunity to recognize the contributions of grape growers and

8

the entire wine industry to this Commonwealth and to the nation;

9

therefore be it

10

RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage the citizens of this

11

Commonwealth to engage in the festivities and gain awareness of

12

the services and products offered by Pennsylvania wineries

13

through all seasons of the year; and be it further

14

RESOLVED, That the Senate proclaim the Pennsylvania wine

15

industry to be a vital part of this Commonwealth's agricultural

16

and tourism industries, and hereby designate October 15, 2011,

17

to be "Pennsylvania Wine Day."
