A RESOLUTION

1

Designating November 19, 2009, as "Children's Grief Awareness

2

Day" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Children who have had a loved one die, especially a

4

close family member, can carry that loss within them forever and

5

it sometimes causes confusion in the mind of a young person as

6

to why their loved one was taken away; and

7

WHEREAS, Highmark Caring Place is a center for grieving

8

children, adolescents and their families and there are several

9

Caring Place centers throughout this Commonwealth; and

10

WHEREAS, Some families regard Caring Place centers as the

11

salvation of their family unit, a place where, above all else,

12

they can find comfort, understanding and help in time of grief;

13

and

14

WHEREAS, The Caring Team for Children is an initiative of

15

Highmark Caring Place which encompasses hundreds of schools,

16

businesses and community partners working together to increase a

17

common awareness and raise funds for the needs of grieving

1

children; and

2

WHEREAS, Every school has students who have experienced some

3

type of personal loss and many of them have no way to express or

4

share that loss with others; and

5

WHEREAS, When a Caring Team for Children member reaches out

6

in understanding of what a fellow classmate might be going

7

through the burden is lightened and the student no longer feels

8

so alone; and

9

WHEREAS, On November 19, 2009, Caring Team for Children

10

schools across Pennsylvania will be joining together to show

11

their support for grieving children by participating in

12

"Children's Grief Awareness Day"; and

13

WHEREAS, A simple way to participate is to encourage as many

14

people in the school as possible to wear blue on that day as a

15

symbol of support for "Children's Grief Awareness Day"; and

16

WHEREAS, The Senate applauds the work being accomplished by

17

the Highmark Caring Place and the Caring Team for Children

18

schools across this Commonwealth; therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate November 19, 2009, as

20

"Children's Grief Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
