A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of October 2009 as "National Lupus

2

Awareness Month."

WHEREAS, Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease

4

which causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissue

5

and organs, including the kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, blood or

6

skin; and

7

WHEREAS, Lupus affects one out of every 185 Americans and

8

primarily strikes women between the ages of 15 and 45, but men

9

as well as children are also affected; and

10

WHEREAS, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with lupus, with

11

more than 66,000 living in Pennsylvania; and

12

WHEREAS, Lupus is more prevalent in African Americans,

13

Latinos, Native Americans and Asians; and

14

WHEREAS, Lupus is America's least known major disease but

15

strikes more people than leukemia, multiple sclerosis, muscular

16

dystrophy and cystic fibrosis combined; and

WHEREAS, Thousands of Americans die each year from lupus-

2

related complications; and

3

WHEREAS, Lupus is often referred to as "the disease that

4

fools," due to the patient's unawareness of its presence for

5

extended periods of time; and

6

WHEREAS, Clinicians may confuse lupus with other disorders,

7

and persons with lupus may give the appearance of being healthy;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, The majority of Americans do not understand lupus,

10

how widespread it is or its ramifications for the health care

11

industry; and

12

WHEREAS, With early diagnosis and current methods of therapy,

13

80% to 90% of persons with lupus can look forward to a normal

14

life span if they follow the instructions of their physicians,

15

take medications as prescribed and know when to seek medical

16

assistance; and

17

WHEREAS, The Patient Voice for Lupus Research is a strong

18

national effort to increase awareness and research on lupus; and

19

WHEREAS, The Lupus Research Institute was created in 1999 by

20

patients, their families and top scientists out of a sense of

21

urgency to attack and defeat lupus; and

22

WHEREAS, Today the Lupus Research Institute stands at the

23

forefront of innovation in lupus research and is supported

24

within Pennsylvania by the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania,

25

which has four regional chapters: Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Erie

26

and Pocono Northeast and the Lupus Foundation, Philadelphia Tri-

27

State Chapter; therefore be it

28

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of October 2009

29

as "National Lupus Awareness Month."
