| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Supporting the goals and ideals of Peace Day, which is being |
2 | observed on September 21, 2011, throughout the world. |
3 | WHEREAS, William Penn founded Pennsylvania on the principle |
4 | of universal brotherhood, a revolutionary canon that promoted |
5 | religious and political freedom and racial equality; and |
6 | WHEREAS, His visions of peace, freedom and equality laid the |
7 | foundation for modern society in Pennsylvania and the United |
8 | States, including many of the ideals vital to our rights as |
9 | human beings; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The United Nations believes in this same vision, |
11 | working to promote the ideals and principles of peace and human |
12 | rights across the globe; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly |
14 | unanimously declared the International Day of Peace be devoted |
15 | to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within |
16 | and among all nations and peoples; and |
17 | WHEREAS, In 2001, the United Nations unanimously established |

1 | the United Nations International Day of Peace as September 21, |
2 | to be observed each year in promotion of global cease-fire and |
3 | nonviolence; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Peace Day, as it is known in the United States, has |
5 | been a day instrumental to hostility cessation, public awareness |
6 | and providing a platform for nonviolent activities worldwide, |
7 | including peace walks, concerts, art exhibitions, school |
8 | assemblies, peace-building programs, environmental activities, |
9 | memorial services and vaccination campaigns; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Peace Day observances are wide ranging, with many |
11 | organizations and cities across Pennsylvania, from Philadelphia |
12 | to Pittsburgh, creating practical acts of peace for our citizens |
13 | to further understand and actively participate in a movement of |
14 | nonviolence; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In 2009, the United States Senate passed a |
16 | resolution expressing its support for the goals and ideals |
17 | celebrated on Peace Day and for "continuing efforts to raise |
18 | global awareness of the goals of Peace Day and to engage all |
19 | sectors of society in the peaceful observance of the |
20 | International Day of Peace"; and |
21 | WHEREAS, The 2009 Senate resolution "encourages people in the |
22 | United States to observe Peace Day with appropriate programs, |
23 | ceremonies, and educational activities, in order to raise |
24 | awareness of the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts of |
25 | all kinds"; and |
26 | WHEREAS, September 21, 2011, marks the 30th anniversary of |
27 | the International Day of Peace, a day for all people to rise |
28 | above the issues that divide us, including politics, religion, |
29 | race, culture, economic circumstance, age and gender; and |
30 | WHEREAS, The United Nations' theme for Peace Day 2011 is |

1 | "Make Your Voice Heard"; and |
2 | WHEREAS, September 21, 2011, marks the 365-day countdown to |
3 | Global Truce 2012, a campaign by a nonprofit organization based |
4 | in the United Kingdom, known as Peace One Day, founded by Jeremy |
5 | Gilley, to create the largest reduction in violence on a single |
6 | day in our history, providing a window for extraordinary |
7 | humanitarian aid efforts and significant reductions in violence |
8 | worldwide; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Dr. Jane Goodall was made a United Nations Messenger |
10 | of Peace because of her program, Roots and Shoots, a program |
11 | based on the belief in the ability of our youth to identify and |
12 | solve the complex problems that exist between humans, humans and |
13 | animals and humans and the environment, a philosophy integral to |
14 | Peace Day observances; therefore be it |
15 | RESOLVED, That the Senate express its support for the goals |
16 | and ideals celebrated on Peace Day on September 21, 2011, in |
17 | Pennsylvania, and encourage all citizens of this Commonwealth to |
18 | become aware of and participate in the important peace |
19 | activities being carried out on this day. |
