A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the month of June 2011 as "Foster Grandparent

2

Program Month" in Pennsylvania and congratulating the

3

National Association of Foster Grandparent Program Directors,

4

and the program volunteers, on the occasion of the program's

5

45th anniversary.

6

WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program began on August 28,

7

1965, under the Office of Economic Opportunity; and

8

WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program permits persons 60

9

years of age or older with limited incomes to engage in

10

intergenerational volunteer service that meets critical

11

community needs; and

12

WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program serves children and

13

youth who have special requirements, including those who are

14

mentally or physically challenged, juvenile delinquents and

15

those who are abused, neglected, learning disabled or come from

16

a low-income-family background; and

17

WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program enables participating

18

children to improve their physical, mental, emotional and social

development and attain educational goals through tutoring,

2

mentoring, counseling and other personal support services; and

3

WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program greatly enriches the

4

lives of the children as well as the adult volunteers; and

5

WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program has grown from a few

6

programs in several states to 342 programs in all 50 states, the

7

District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the

8

Virgin Islands; and

9

WHEREAS, The Foster Grandparent Program has approximately

10

32,500 volunteers and serves more than 263,000 children and

11

youth annually; and 

12

WHEREAS, This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Foster

13

Grandparent Program; therefore be it

14

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize and commend the

15

immeasurable contributions of the Foster Grandparent Program and

16

its volunteers in this Commonwealth; and be it further

17

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of June 2011 as

18

"Foster Grandparent Program Month" in Pennsylvania and

19

congratulate the National Association of Foster Grandparent

20

Program Directors, and the program volunteers, on the 45th

21

anniversary of the program; and be it further

22

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

23

the National Association of Foster Grandparent Program Directors

24
