A RESOLUTION
Designating June 27, 2011, as "Osteoarthritis Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis
affecting nearly 27 million Americans; and
WHEREAS, Osteoarthritis often occurs in the hands and knees
with pain as a common symptom; and
WHEREAS, Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage and its
underlying bone begin to deteriorate; and
WHEREAS, A direct cause of osteoarthritis has not been
determined, but risk factors such as aging, joint injury or
stress, heredity and other factors can contribute to the
disease; and
WHEREAS, There is currently no cure for osteoarthritis but
there are several strategies that can help manage the pain
associated with it, which include the use of walking aids,
insoles, physical activity and weight loss; and
WHEREAS, Former National Basketball Association (NBA) player
Allan Houston is working to raise awareness of osteoarthritis

hand and knee pain and to encourage sufferers to make pain
relief a top priority by visiting their doctor; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Houston, who retired from the NBA due to pain in
his knee caused by osteoarthritis, will be in Chadds Ford on
June 27, 2011, to participate in Osteoarthritis Awareness Day;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Houston will share his story about managing
osteoarthritis knee pain and bring issues related to
osteoarthritis joint pain into the forefront; and
WHEREAS, Osteoarthritis Awareness Day will provide a forum
for an open dialogue about the disease in order to raise
awareness and encourage sufferers and their loved ones to learn
about the importance of being proactive about pain relief;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 27, 2011, as
"Osteoarthritis Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
