| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating May 18, 2009, as "HIV Vaccine Awareness Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Since 1981, more than 25 million people worldwide |
4 | have died of AIDS, and young people account for half of all new |
5 | worldwide HIV infections; and |
6 | WHEREAS, These statistics remind us that the development of |
7 | an HIV vaccine is an urgent humanitarian imperative; and |
8 | WHEREAS, A preventive HIV vaccine is a substance that teaches |
9 | the body's immune system to recognize and protect itself against |
10 | HIV, the virus that causes AIDS; and |
11 | WHEREAS, HIV vaccines currently tested in humans are made |
12 | from manmade materials that cannot cause HIV infection; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The long-term goal is to develop a vaccine that is |
14 | completely effective and protects everyone from infection; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Even though a vaccine would only protect some |
16 | people, it could still have a major impact on controlling the |
17 | epidemic; and |

1 | WHEREAS, By raising awareness and encouraging study |
2 | participation, individuals and communities can contribute to the |
3 | successful development of HIV vaccines; and |
4 | WHEREAS, This year's "HIV Vaccine Awareness Day" provides an |
5 | opportunity to renew and strengthen the commitment to finding a |
6 | safe and effective HIV vaccine that will slow and hopefully one |
7 | day end the HIV/AIDS epidemic; therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 18, 2009, as "HIV |
9 | Vaccine Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania to thank the thousands of |
10 | volunteers, community members, health professionals and |
11 | scientists who work together to find a safe and effective HIV |
12 | vaccine and to educate our communities about the importance of |
13 | preventive HIV vaccine research. |
