A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the American Cancer Society for its commitment to

2

research and public service and designating the week of March

3

16 through 22, 2009, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in

4

Pennsylvania.

5

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society is the largest source of

6

private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United States,

7

second only to the Federal Government in dollars spent; and

8

WHEREAS, To date, the American Cancer Society has invested

9

more than $3 billion in cancer research, including current

10

grants of $38.1 million in this Commonwealth as of January 1,

11

2009; and

12

WHEREAS, This investment in research is paying off, with more

13

than 66% of male cancer patients surviving at least five years

after cancer diagnosis and 63% of women surviving at least five

2

years after cancer diagnosis; and

3

WHEREAS, Over the years and with funds raised from Daffodil

4

Days, the American Cancer Society has made great strides in

5

cancer research, including funding scientists who have

6

discovered the Papanicolaou test, bone marrow transplant

7

techniques, tamoxifen and Gleevec; and

8

WHEREAS, Daffodil Days is one of the American Cancer

9

Society's oldest fundraising programs and for 36 years has

10

helped to empower people to make a difference in the fight

11

against cancer; and

12

WHEREAS, Forty-two Nobel Prize winners were funded by the

13

American Cancer Society at some point in their career; and

14

WHEREAS, Approximately 70,110 people in this Commonwealth

15

were diagnosed with cancer last year and approximately 29,370

16

people succumbed to cancer; and

17

WHEREAS, One in every two men and one in every three women

18

will develop cancer, therefore, it is imperative for the

19

American Cancer Society to continue to expand flower sales and

20

volunteer participation in Daffodil Days so that everyone can

21

continue to work together toward a cancer-free society;

22

therefore be it

23

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

24

American Cancer Society for its commitment to research and

25

public service and designate the week of March 16 through 22,

26

2009, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
