A RESOLUTION

Designating September 21, 2012, as "POW/MIA Recognition Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, For many Americans, the wars and armed conflicts in

4

which United States military personnel have engaged bring

5

difficult memories; and

6

WHEREAS, For former prisoners of war and the families of

7

missing personnel, these memories and emotions are particularly

8

painful; and

9

WHEREAS, In the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict, hundreds

10

of thousands of brave Americans left their homes and families to

11

defend freedom and democracy in the face of communist

12

aggression; and

WHEREAS, The Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom,

2

Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation New Dawn and the Global

3

War on Terrorism have created a new generation of POW/MIA heroes

4

who have sacrificed so much to protect the freedoms enjoyed by

5

the citizens of the United States and to provide freedom and

6

democracy for oppressed persons living in countries controlled

7

by dictators and terrorist regimes; and

8

WHEREAS, Thousands of American military personnel lost their

9

lives in battle, and the fate of more than 83,000 Americans from

10

past conflicts is still unknown; and

11

WHEREAS, Many Americans held captive were subjected to

12

unspeakable horrors but maintained their honor, strong faith in

13

our nation and indomitable spirit; and

14

WHEREAS, There are approximately 22,000 courageous former

15

prisoners of war living among us, including those held captive

16

during World War II, who all still cope with the physical and

17

emotional effects of their captivity; and

18

WHEREAS, We owe a profound debt of gratitude to the quiet

19

heroes who served our nation so well and sacrificed so much,

20

and, to the families of those still missing in action, we pledge

21

our unwavering commitment to achieve the fullest possible

22

accounting of their loved ones and to seek the recovery,

23

repatriation and identification of the remains of those who have

24

died; and

25

WHEREAS, The flag of the National League of Families of

26

American Prisoners of War and Missing in Southeast Asia, a black

27

and white banner symbolizing America's missing service members

28

and our unshakable resolve to ascertain their fate, is flown as

29

a powerful reminder of our duty to honor and account for all

30

persons who have so faithfully served in all wars and conflicts

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate

3

September 21, 2012, as "POW/MIA Recognition Day" in

4

Pennsylvania.
