A RESOLUTION

Designating April 7, 2010, as "National Start! Walking Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Each year, 1.25 million Americans suffer a new or

4

recurrent coronary attack; and

5

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the nation's leading cause

6

of death with direct and indirect costs estimated to be $503.2

7

billion in 2010; and

8

WHEREAS, More physical activity can help improve these

9

statistics, and some adults may gain up to two hours of life

10

expectancy for every hour of regular, vigorous physical

11

activity, such as very brisk walking; and

12

WHEREAS, In addition to the possibility of increased life

13

expectancy, regular walking has many proven benefits for an

14

individual's overall health; and

WHEREAS, Brisk walking for 30 minutes a day can lower both

2

bad cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, and it may also

3

help prevent weight gain and reduce the risk of stroke; and

4

WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

5

estimate that physically active people save $330 per year in

6

direct medical expenditures; and

7

WHEREAS, On "National Start! Walking Day," the American Heart

8

Association's Start! initiative calls on all citizens of this

9

Commonwealth to walk for at least 30 minutes; and

10

WHEREAS, By increasing awareness of the importance of

11

physical activity to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease,

12

thousands of lives each year can be saved; and

13

WHEREAS, The purpose behind "National Start! Walking Day" is

14

to get Americans to become more physically active by walking;

15

therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April

17

7, 2010, as "National Start! Walking Day" in Pennsylvania and

18

urge all citizens to show their support for walking and the

19

fight against heart disease by walking at work.
