A RESOLUTION

Urging the Congress of the United States to designate a day each

2

year in honor of the lifetime achievements of the late

3

Roberto Clemente.

4

WHEREAS, Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934, in

5

Carolina, Puerto Rico; and

6

WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente played 18 seasons in Major League

7

Baseball (MLB) as a right fielder and right-handed batter from

8

1955 to 1972 with the Pittsburgh Pirates; and

9

WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente won the National League MLB Most

10

Valuable Player Award in 1966; and

11

WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente died in a plane crash on December 31,

12

1972, while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to earthquake

13

victims in Nicaragua; and

14

WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente was posthumously elected to the

15

National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 as the first Latin

American to be selected and the only exception to the mandatory

2

five-year postretirement waiting period since it was instituted

3

in 1954; and

4

WHEREAS, In 1973, Mr. Clemente was posthumously awarded the

5

Congressional Gold Medal and in 2002, the Presidential Medal of

6

Freedom; therefore be it

7

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

8

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the Congress of the United

9

States to designate a day each year in honor of the lifetime

10

achievements of the late Roberto Clemente.
