A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of March 2010 as "Gambling Addiction

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Problem gambling is gambling behavior that causes

4

disruption in any major area of life and includes the condition

5

known as "pathological" or "compulsive" gambling; and

6

WHEREAS, Gambling addiction is a progressive addiction

7

characterized by increasing preoccupation with gambling, a need

8

to bet more and more money, restlessness or irritability when

9

attempting to stop, increased frequency of gambling and loss of

10

control manifested by continuation of the gambling behavior in

11

spite of mounting serious, negative consequences; and

12

WHEREAS, Recently enacted gambling legislation in

13

Pennsylvania allows table games to become a part of the

14

landscape of this Commonwealth and makes gambling addiction

among its residents a possibility and likelihood; and

2

WHEREAS, There are useful organizations and counseling

3

therapists available to help persons overcome gambling addiction

4

and restore stability to their lives; and

5

WHEREAS, Awareness of gambling addiction and the availability

6

of treatment programs will help to mitigate problems that might

7

arise as a result of the allowance of table games in

8

Pennsylvania; therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

10

month of March 2010 as "Gambling Addiction Awareness Month" in

11

Pennsylvania.
