A RESOLUTION

Designating the week of February 1 through 5, 2010, as "Teen

2

Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week" in

3

Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, One in three female teenagers in a dating

5

relationship has feared for her physical safety; and

6

WHEREAS, One in two teenagers in a serious relationship has

7

compromised personal beliefs to please a partner; and

8

WHEREAS, One in five teenagers in a serious relationship

9

reports having been hit, slapped or pushed by a partner; and

10

WHEREAS, Twenty-seven percent of teenagers have been in

11

dating relationships in which their partners have called them

12

names or degraded them; and

13

WHEREAS, Twenty-nine percent of girls who have been in a

14

relationship said that they have been pressured to have sex or

15

to engage in sexual activities that they did not want; and

WHEREAS, Technologies such as cell phones and the Internet

2

have made dating abuse both more pervasive and more hidden; and

3

WHEREAS, Thirty percent of teenagers who have been in a

4

dating relationship say that they have been text-messaged

5

between 10 and 30 times per hour by a partner seeking to find

6

out where they are, what they are doing or with whom they are;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, Seventy-two percent of teenagers who reported that

9

they had been monitored by a boyfriend or girlfriend ten times

10

per hour by e-mail or text messaging did not tell their parents

11

and many parents are largely unaware of the cell phone and

12

Internet harassment experienced by teenagers; and

13

WHEREAS, Native American women experience higher rates of

14

interpersonal violence than any other population group; and

15

WHEREAS, Violent relationships in adolescence can have

16

serious ramifications for victims, putting them at higher risk

17

for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior,

18

suicide and adult revictimization; and

19

WHEREAS, The severity of violence among intimate partners has

20

been shown to be greater in cases where the pattern of violence

21

has been established in adolescence; and

22

WHEREAS, The establishment of "Teen Dating Violence Awareness

23

and Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania, will benefit schools,

24

communities and families regardless of socioeconomic status,

25

race or sex; therefore be it

26

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

27

week of February 1 through 5, 2010, as "Teen Dating Violence

28

Awareness and Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it

29

further

30

RESOLVED, That all residents of this Commonwealth be called

upon to observe "Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention

2

Week" by encouraging appropriate programs and activities that

3

promote awareness and prevention of the crime of teen dating

4

violence in their communities.
