A RESOLUTION

Recognizing January 25 and 26, 2010, as "Sudden Arrhythmia Death

2

Syndromes Days" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes (SADS) are

4

inherited heart conditions that can cause sudden death in young,

5

apparently healthy people; and

6

WHEREAS, Unexpected cardiac arrhythmias cause nearly 400,000

7

deaths annually, of which nearly 4,000 are young people under 35

8

years of age; and

9

WHEREAS, Children are the largest group affected by these

10

conditions; and

11

WHEREAS, Symptoms may include fainting, seizures during or

12

immediately after exercise, excitement or being startled, chest

13

pain that is constant or unusual and shortness of breath during

exercise; and

2

WHEREAS, Most of these deaths can be prevented if the

3

condition is diagnosed and treated in advance; and

4

WHEREAS, Conditions include Long QT Syndrome and hypertrophic

5

cardiomyopathy; and

6

WHEREAS, Long QT Syndrome occurs three times more than

7

childhood leukemia and is a condition which causes the heart's

8

electrical rhythm to become irregular; and

9

WHEREAS, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most frequent

10

cause of sudden cardiac death in young people; and

11

WHEREAS, Nathan Khosla, a graduate of Mount Lebanon High

12

School, undertook SADS awareness for his Eagle Scout project by

13

organizing free screenings to search for cardiac conditions in

14

students, athletes and adults in his community; and

15

WHEREAS, Mr. Khosla has now established the Nathan Khosla

16

Foundation, an organization aimed toward promoting heart health

17

through free or low-cost heart screenings and CPR classes; and

18

WHEREAS, The SADS Foundation is a nonprofit charitable

19

organization that is dedicated to educating society and

20

supporting the families and children who are at risk to sudden

21

death due to cardiac arrhythmias; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize January

23

25 and 26, 2010, as "Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes Days" and

24

call upon citizens of Pennsylvania to observe these days by

25

participating in appropriate activities to raise awareness about

26

Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes.
