| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the 140th anniversary of Chatham University as it |
2 | continues to build a history and tradition of excellence in |
3 | women's education and in meeting the changing needs of |
4 | society. |
5 | WHEREAS, Founded on December 11, 1869, Chatham University was |
6 | first known as Pennsylvania Female College and renamed |
7 | Pennsylvania College for Women in 1890 and Chatham College in |
8 | 1955 to honor William Pitt, First Earl of Chatham; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Chatham University was granted university status by |
10 | the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on May 1, 2007; and |
11 | WHEREAS, According to its mission, Chatham University |
12 | prepares its students, from bachelors through doctoral levels, |
13 | on campus and around the world, to excel in their professions |
14 | and to become environmentally responsible, globally conscious, |
15 | lifelong learners and citizen leaders for democracy; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The historic undergraduate college, Chatham College |

1 | for Women, is one of the oldest women's colleges in the United |
2 | States and is the alma mater to thousands of women leaders, |
3 | including Rachel Carson, class of 1929, founder of the modern |
4 | environmental movement; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The College for Graduate Studies offers women and |
6 | men both master's and doctoral programs in art and architecture, |
7 | business, counseling psychology, health sciences and nursing, |
8 | teaching and writing; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The College for Continuing and Professional Studies |
10 | provides online and hybrid undergraduate and graduate degree |
11 | programs for women and men, as well as certificate programs and |
12 | community programming, such as the celebrated Summer Music and |
13 | Arts Day Camp which next year celebrates its 54th anniversary; |
14 | and |
15 | WHEREAS, Since 1992, Chatham University has grown under the |
16 | leadership of Esther L. Barazzone, Ph.D., who, as the |
17 | university's 16th President, has increased enrollment, created |
18 | new programs that focus on civic engagement, environmental |
19 | awareness and global understanding and attracted students and |
20 | educators from around the globe to the City of Pittsburgh; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Under Dr. Barazzone's leadership, critical outreach |
22 | centers have been established in the Pittsburgh area, including |
23 | the Center for Women's Entrepreneurship, the Pennsylvania Center |
24 | for Women, Politics and Public Policy, the Pittsburgh Teachers |
25 | Institute and the Rachel Carson Institute; and |
26 | WHEREAS, Through Dr. Barazzone's leadership, Chatham |
27 | University received the Eden Hall Farm from Eden Hall Foundation |
28 | on May 1, 2008, which is now known as the Eden Hall Campus, and |
29 | is home of Chatham University's new School of Sustainability and |
30 | the Environment; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In June 2008, Chatham University's Shadyside Campus |
2 | was expanded to include Chatham Eastside at Fifth and Penn |
3 | Avenues in Pittsburgh's East Liberty and Larimer neighborhoods |
4 | in order to enlarge its graduate programs and to invest in one |
5 | of Pittsburgh's fastest growing neighborhoods; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The undergraduate and graduate student body of more |
7 | than 2,200 represents 28 states and 18 other countries and |
8 | minority groups, and international students compose 20% of the |
9 | undergraduate student body who are enrolled in more than 60 |
10 | degree programs; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Chatham University prepares its students for a |
12 | lifetime of personal and professional achievements, |
13 | unprecedented opportunities, challenges and leadership roles |
14 | that Chatham University's founders could only have imagined in |
15 | 1869; therefore be it |
16 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 140th |
17 | anniversary of Chatham University as it continues to build a |
18 | history and tradition of excellence in women's education and in |
19 | meeting the changing needs of society. |
